Get to know Shawn

I was born in Ontario, Canada, am currently 50 years old, and started racing bikes in 1988, at the age of 14. I progressed through the cycling ranks from a young Junior to a Category 1 racer, and moved to California in 1997. Throughout my racing career, I have competed in many types of races, including criteriums, road races, stage races, time trials, mountain bike races, gravel races and cyclocross races, across Canada, Europe and the USA.

In 2017, I competed in the Haute Route Alps in France, did some grand fondos and criteriums, and began to dabble in endurance/ultra racing with my first RAAM Challenge race, a 200+ mile event through San Diego county; and after that I was hooked! Soon after I competed in some California Triple Crown races, most of which broke the 200 mile mark. This gave me some confidence and lead me to try the 24 Hour World Time Trial Championship in Borrego Springs, CA. I remember one thing about my first attempt at the event -  my bike racer mentality and eagerness to "race" did not pay off! I rode too fast, froze during the night, and melted the next day in the heat, and didn't reach my 400 mile goal (was short at ~350 miles), but I learned a ton. On my 3rd attempt, I qualified for RAW/RAAM solo and rode 405 miles in the 24 hour race.

In 2022, I competed in Race Across the West (RAW) solo, starting in Oceanside, CA, and successfully finished about 900 miles later in Durango, CO. This was not without struggles and stress, but it showed me that I still have an urge and a passion to further challenge myself; and thoughts of racing solo RAAM began to

feel attainable. When RAAM registration opened for

2025, I registered immediately, and here we are!
